Kirchdorf and
Timmendort on the island of Poel near Wismar on the Baltic Sea coast in

On the south side of the
island of Poel, directly at the small bay Kirchsee,
there is the small village Kirchdorf. |

It used to be a fishing
village with some agriculture, today it is a holiday
resort.
Even from far away you can see the new marina which was
built after the Wende. The ships are moored side by side
in the sheltered Kirchsee. Nature is unspoilt in and
around Kirchdorf. The region is suitable for hikers and
cyclers. Here, you can watch flocks of cormorants. We
also recommend a visit of the old rampart of the castle
with the well-preserved island church. There are also
some pubs and restaurants with a local flavour. |

A visit of the
museum of local history in Kirchdorf is worth it. It is
located in the former school building, which was built in
1806. Here, you can find out interesting things about Poel
and its people. A part of the museum is about the plants and
animals of the island. You also have the opportunity to take
a pleasure steamer from Kirchdorf to Wismar or Boltenhagen. |

At the west coast of the
island of Poel there is the small holiday resort
Timmendorf. Even at GDR times many people spent their
holiday here and enjoyed the beautiful sandy beach.
Swimming in the clear water of the Baltic Sea is high on
the list of priorities. There is a guarded bathing
beach, so that the necessary safety is guaranteed. There
is also a nudist beach and a beach for dogs. |

The Old Port has been
reconstructed and modernized since 1995. Now there is space
for sailing yachts and boats. Nevertheless, fishermen also
use the new modern port. At the port there is also the
lighthouse of Timmendorf. The lighthouse has been in
operation since 1871 to make it easier for ships to enter
and leave the port. The redesigned promenade is also worth
seeing. A walk along the shops, cafés and restaurants is
worth it.

There are small guest houses im
Timmendorf, but also a lot of holiday apartments and houses.
They offer modern overnight accomodation. Another tip for
visitors are interesting boat trips to Wismar and
Boltenhagen. |
